It’s possible that Mlungisi Maseko didn’t think of himself as a hero, but there’s no other way to explain his unselfish deed of utilizing his Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout to provide water to his town.
He used R1.3m from his RAF payout to buy water tanks, pipes and other equipment for his community, as reported by the Sowetan.
Since his story was shared last month, many South Africans were moved by it, with many applauding him for his big heart. They are amazed at the sacrifice he made to provide his people with water.
He was sick and tired of watching his people in Mooiplaas village, in the local municipality of Chief Albert Luthuli in Mpumalanga, struggle to obtain water from a stream that was roughly five kilometers distant.
So he came up with an idea to purchase water tanks, pipelines, and other supplies to bring water closer to their homes using his money, which was a settlement he received after being involved in a car accident in 2018.
Now that at least 105 homes have access to water, Maseko expressed how happy this makes him. Prior to the vehicle accident, he worked as a scaffolder.
“I drilled my own well to water my two hectares of farming property after quitting my job. I visited with them and informed them about the idea to bring water from the stream to their homes after observing the misery in the neighbourhood where I was raised and the elderly hauling buckets of water five kilometres,” he told radio host Clement Manyathela on 702.
Maseko’s tale demonstrates that there are plenty of community heroes in our nation who are prepared to part with material belongings in order to advance society.
Our communities would be better places to live today if half of South Africans possessed Maseko’s kindness, compassion, and readiness to lend a helping hand to their neighbors without asking anything in return.
