With just a picture, 37-year-old Hendricks Cheganga can create nearly similar vehicle models out of garbage and salvaged parts.
Cheganga told News24 that he began drawing cars when he was just four years old.
Hendricks Africa Crafts Works was founded by him, and he is its proprietor. He uses wire, rubber, plastic, and scrap metal to construct his masterpieces.
Cheganga models cars, aeroplanes, and boats for his international clients during the day.
“My parents knew I was gifted when I started making small bicycles using wires,” he said.
A resident of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, the “Helicopter Man” has won admiration from all around the world.
He used scrap metal and corrugated iron to construct a life-size model of a police helicopter nearly ten years ago. It takes him at least two weeks to complete a model.
Cheganga was already using scooby wire to make automobile models when he was four years old. He left his native Zimbabwe at the age of sixteen to follow his goals in South Africa after graduating from high school in 2005.
He developed his abilities by trial and error without any official instruction or training.
“I would search for outdated items at disposal sites. In order to manufacture some wheels, I used to walk five to fifteen KM in search of tins and rubbers. I had a hard time finding the content,” Cheganga said.
His clientele is international, and business is flourishing. His phone is inundated with requests from them, asking him to reproduce their beloved cars.
His wife helps paint the automobiles and add embellishments, and he has hired his family members as apprentices.
“I’m proud to say that my business has greatly helped my family,” he added.
“I can now make a living from my talent, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my art with the world.”
Cheganga said that his courage and gumption were the keys to his success.
“Don’t look back; just get started! Just do it,” he said when asled to advise fellow entrepreneurs.
