This Young Entrepreneur Turned Passion into a Haircare Brand Built from Scratch

In a world where unemployment often silences dreams, Amu Wilma Shivuri (26) chose to listen to the quiet voice within her—the one that urged her to create, lead, and uplift.

Today, she stands as the founder of InneRoots Essentials (PTY) LTD, a Limpopo-based natural haircare brand born out of both scientific curiosity and an unwavering sense of purpose.

Raised in Tshamahansi village, Mokopane, and a chemical engineering graduate from the Vaal University of Technology, Shivuri initially imagined herself working in the mining sector. But like many graduates, she was met with the reality of limited job prospects.

“I’ve always been ambitious,” she says.

“But I also wanted to make a difference. That’s why I started a foundation, Keeping a Child Warm, to help children with uniforms and school essentials.”

It was during this uncertain period that a consistent theme emerged—people complimenting her hair. That simple feedback planted a seed. Using her chemistry background, and with just a small allowance from her mother, Shivuri developed a hair growth oil she first tested on her mother and the family helper. The results were visible within weeks.

“I almost gave up,” she admits. “But when my mum saw results, I knew I had something.”

With her savings, she produced 20 more bottles and launched InneRoots Essentials in 2023.

The brand has since grown steadily, supported by the Small Enterprise Development Finance Agency and the National Youth Development Agency Funding helped her secure equipment, marketing support, and formal product testing—crucial steps in building trust in a competitive industry.

Despite challenges in marketing, funding, and distribution, Shivuri remains hands-on—developing formulas, managing customer service, and even doing deliveries. “What sets InneRoots apart is its soul,” she said.

“Minimalist but luxurious, our products deliver visible results in two to six weeks.”

Shivuri now works with one part-time assistant but hopes to create more jobs in her community.

Her participation in the Limpopo Jewellery Business Incubator’s SMME programme has further boosted her brand’s visibility and compliance readiness.

“InneRoots Essentials is more than haircare,” Shivuri said.

“It’s about hope, healing, and building a future from the roots up.”

Readers will be inspired by how she turned a small allowance and a few compliments into a growing business and a tool for social change. Her journey reflects the grit and creativity of South Africa’s rising generation of entrepreneurs.

Description: With a chemical engineering degree in hand and no job in sight, 26-year-old Amu Wilma Shivuri didn’t wait for opportunity—she created it. InneRoots Essentials, her natural haircare brand, is more than a business; it’s a vehicle for empowerment, resilience, and community impact.
