This Gauteng Based Farmer Is Helping To Grow Jobs, Hope, and the Future of Agriculture

At the heart of passion for agriculture is a mission to create employment and offer hope. The 27-year-old farmer from the West Rand is not only committed to growing produce but to creating opportunities for young people in his community—particularly through sustainable farming.

Seaja’s vision goes beyond earning profits from agriculture.

“I don’t just want to make money from farming, I want to create jobs, inspire young people, and give them hope,” he said, while embodying his mission of uplifting others.

While Seaja’s early life wasn’t centered on farming, his mother always saw potential in him. With a two-hectare plot at home, he was exposed to farming at a young age.

“At home, we volunteered from a young age. She always said she was preparing us for our own farm,” Seaja recalled.

His mother’s foresight played a key role in shaping his future, and it wasn’t long before Seaja realized that agriculture was more than just a way to make a living—it was a platform to build his community.

Seaja’s official journey in farming began in 2010 when his family registered a cooperative. By 2022, his dedication earned him the position of chairperson. This role allows him to bridge the gap between young farmers and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, ensuring emerging farmers get the support they need.

His business also thrives on the agri-park initiative, where he farms tomatoes, green peppers, and manages 40 beehives.

According to Seaja, the municipality provided the land, and the government supplied essential equipment. These efforts underscore the importance of government support in fostering small-scale, sustainable farming.

However, Seaja’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Initially, he worked with large retailers, but the competition on pricing led him to shift focus.

“With vendors, we can’t keep up with demand, and we save on costs since the clients pick up the produce themselves. We don’t have to pay agent fees,” he shared.

This direct-to-vendor approach has been more profitable, offering a sustainable income.

Seaja’s business now employs four people, and he dreams of expanding further, providing internships, and creating more jobs as he grows his farm. His vision remains clear: agriculture isn’t just a business—it’s a vehicle for community upliftment and youth empowerment.

Editor’s note: This story offers more than just an insight into farming—it’s about employment creation, youth empowerment, and renewable opportunity. As Seaja’s work proves, agriculture is a dynamic, sustainable field that can fuel both economic growth and community upliftment, providing a blueprint for young South Africans looking to make a difference.
