This Soweto Entrepreneur Turning Rubble into Building Sources

What started as a disturbing sight of rubble and debris near Naturena, south of Johannesburg, has grown into a powerful community-driven enterprise.

For 49-year-old Phethuxolo Ngoyi of Emdeni, Soweto, told Vuk’uzenzele that the persistent issue of construction and demolition waste in local townships became the spark for a business that is now helping to clean the environment, reduce landfill waste, and provide sustainable jobs.

Ngoyi is the founder of Vanquisher Building Solutions, a construction company that uses an impressive 80% repurposed waste material and only 20% new material in all its building projects.

From old bricks and cement slabs to discarded tyres, Vanquisher turns what others throw away into lasting infrastructure.

“I saw a lot of rubble being dumped in the townships — cement, bricks, tyres — and I thought, something has to be done,” Ngoyi explained.

His business doesn’t just build with waste — it reimagines it. When demolishing buildings, Ngoyi and his team carefully remove intact bricks and materials for reuse. This not only preserves valuable resources but also ensures that reconstructed buildings are just as strong and durable as those built from entirely new materials.

After visiting a school in Johannesburg and seeing unsafe play areas, he took action — designing and building a child-friendly playground using recycled tyre granules. The result was a rubber-free Mickey Mouse-themed ECD playground that minimises injury from falls, giving young children a safe and joyful place to play.

“I saw children playing around broken bricks and rubble. I knew I could do better,” he explained.

This initiative is more than a playground — it’s a symbol of what sustainable design can achieve when paired with genuine care for community wellbeing.

Though Vanquisher Building Solutions has yet to receive formal funding, Ngoyi has permanently employed three staff members, with additional workers hired during larger projects. He also collaborates with subcontractors to scale up, extending job opportunities and strengthening local partnerships.

“We’re not just building structures — we’re building livelihoods,” he said.
