The cyclists known as Gauta BMX took social media by storm have completed their gruelling 1,600-kilometer journey.
The three young Limpopo men who challenged themselves with a ride from Limpopo to Cape Town have described their journey as a physically and psychologically challenging cycle.
The cyclists are Karabo Mokowo (21) who hails from Riba cross in Sekhukhune District aged 21, Mahlakwane Gauta (22) from Ga Mathabathe-Makgoba Capricorn District and 21 year-old Ndo Maxwell from the Vhembe district.
The purpose of this journey was to raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and other social ills affecting South African communities, reports The Independent Online.
South Africa, like most countries, has been plagued by cases of rape, murder and physical abuse perpetrated against (mostly) women and children.
The selfless efforts by the trio were well received by a number of companies including individuals who donated to the cause – with reports of over half a million in donations.
According to the report, “many fellow South Africans were inspired by their journey as they followed along on social media. More on this Limpopo cyclists inspire change as they journey to Cape Town, overcoming challenges Inspiring Youth Empowerment.”
When they reached City Hall on Monday, just after 2:00 pm, Ricardo Mackenzie, the Western MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sports, not only accompanied them on his bicycle for the final portion but also oversaw much of the program’s activities.
“We’re happy to have you here this afternoon, and many people have prayed for you to get to the Western Cape safely. Millions of South Africans are proud of you for this amazing accomplishment,” he said.
Geordin Hill-Lewis, the mayor of Cape Town, sometimes known as the “mother city,” complimented the young men on their accomplishment of reaching this point.
“We have been keeping an eye on you, the funds you have raised, and the motivation behind it. You have won the hearts of the country and Cape Town during this tour,” Hill-Lewis remarked.
With the assistance of philanthropist and disc jockey DJ Karri, who is also assisting them in locating sponsors and support along the road, their incredible adventure is being chronicled on TikTok and X.
DJ Karri thanked all who donated to the cause.
