This KZN Farmer Uses Drone Innovation to Drive Food Security and Job Creation

Bongiwe Nyawo’s journey into agri-tech began with a curiosity about drone technology and a vision to make a difference in her community. After completing the Drone Divas programme, which provides women with hands-on experience in drone operations, she received a starter drone package and saw an opportunity to turn her skills into a business that could impact both food security and local employment.

In May 2024, she told Vuk’uzenzele that she launched Nyawo Zendalo Air, focusing on providing drone services for sustainable agriculture, forestry, and environmental conservation. Her company helps farmers monitor crops, assess soil health, and detect pests early, improving yields and reducing waste. At the same time, Nyawo employs and trains young people from her community, giving them technical skills and creating pathways into the growing agri-tech sector.

To support revenue and expand its reach, the company also provides security monitoring, aerial photography, and videography services. These additional services help fund training programmes and allow more community members to gain experience with drone operations.

Nyawo has received recognition and support for her innovative work. Funding from the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Office Youth Fund enabled her to purchase additional drones and office equipment. She also won the Dragons’ Den 2025 Most Innovative Small Business Award, demonstrating the commercial and social potential of her venture.

Through the Agri-Tech and Aqua-Tech Acceleration Programme led by the UNDP, Nyawo is developing a new drone that applies bio-fertiliser and eco-friendly pesticides. This project aims to support environmentally responsible farming, reduce chemical impact on the ecosystem, and increase crop productivity, strengthening local food security.

“I want to show that technology can create opportunities for both people and the environment,” Nyawo says. “By training young people and supporting sustainable agriculture, we can improve livelihoods, protect natural resources, and ensure communities have access to healthy, reliable food.”

Nyawo’s work demonstrates how innovation, entrepreneurship, and a focus on community needs can address pressing challenges. Through Nyawo Zendalo Air, she is creating jobs, supporting sustainable agriculture, and building a model for a future where technology serves both people and the planet.
