Every Sunday in Masiphumelele, the Bartosch Foundation comes alive. Children gather not just to play soccer, but to learn, grow, and discover new possibilities. While kicking goals on the field, they also study Afrikaans, science, and maths, take part in yoga and farming sessions, and go on monthly excursions to Table Mountain, the Two Oceans Aquarium, museums, and beaches.
The programme is designed to expand horizons, boost confidence, and provide a sense of belonging for children who might otherwise feel overlooked.
The driving force behind this initiative are Petya Bartosch and Xolani Mahlulo. Petya, a graduate of the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, and Xolani, who grew up in Masiphumelele facing early loss and adversity, met serendipitously in 2020. Petya was delivering food parcels, while Xolani was coaching township children in football.
They told Beautiful News that they instantly recognised a shared vision: to give back unconditionally and use their skills to uplift the community.
Xolani explains, “By the little things you have, you can change someone’s life.” He has seen firsthand how sport can unite communities and inspire children. For kids from broken homes or unstable environments, the gym and soccer field are safe spaces where structure, guidance, and support replace chaos.
Petya and Xolani’s partnership extends beyond training sessions. They mentor the children in kindness, respect, and self-confidence, teaching lessons that go far beyond sport. The monthly excursions introduce the children to new experiences, broadening their understanding of the world and reinforcing the value of curiosity and learning.
Their friendship and collaboration have created a ripple effect. Unlike their own childhoods, divided by opportunity and circumstance, the children in Masiphumelele now have access to support, guidance, and inspiration that can shape their futures. Petya reflects, “It’ll always have a ripple effect.”
Through mentorship, education, sport, and exploration, the Bartosch Foundation is creating a generation of empowered youth who dream bigger, aim higher, and carry forward the values of kindness, community, and perseverance.
Description: When worlds collided in 2020, Petya Bartosch and Xolani Mahlulo turned a chance encounter into a mission of empowerment. Through the Bartosch Foundation, they run soccer and education programmes that uplift children in Masiphumelele, combining sport, academics, life skills, and excursions to inspire confidence and curiosity.
Editor’s Note: This story shows how collaboration, empathy, and initiative can transform communities. Petya and Xolani’s work reflects the power of mentorship, the integration of sport and education, and the importance of broadening horizons for young people in under-resourced areas.
