Growing up in a shack in Ennerdale, Johannesburg, Matimba Mabonda understood the importance of safe and affordable housing.
Today, the University of Cape Town graduate is helping tackle South Africa’s housing crisis through an innovative building solution that uses soil, plastic waste, and glass waste to construct homes.
Through his start-up, LolaGreen, Mabonda developed a method of converting waste collected from landfills and the environment into construction materials. The innovation resulted in the completion of a fully functional three-bedroom house built primarily from earth materials and recycled waste.
The solution responds to two major challenges facing South Africa. It helps address the country’s housing shortage while reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and the environment.
More than 90% of the walls in the pilot home were built using earth materials and recycled plastic waste. The result is a durable and comfortable home that stays warm during winter and cool during summer, reducing the need for expensive heating and cooling systems.
The project also demonstrated that sustainable homes can be built more quickly and at a lower cost than traditional construction methods while maintaining quality and comfort.
As demand for affordable housing continues to grow, innovations such as LolaGreen have the potential to improve access to quality housing, reduce environmental pollution, and create more sustainable communities.
