Turning Waste into Opportunity Ayesha Jacobs Empowers Women Through Recycling Enterprise

Unemployment and environmental degradation are challenges faced by many communities, often at the same time. In response, Ayesha Jacobs has transformed a problem into an opportunity. She founded ReNew Recycling Co-op to train unemployed women in waste sorting, processing, and product manufacturing, creating both livelihoods and environmental impact.

What began with just five members has grown into a cooperative employing 22 women full time. “Waste is everywhere,” Jacobs says, “but so is potential.” Her vision is simple: turn discarded materials into meaningful work and sustainable products while giving women the tools to succeed.

The cooperative operates on two fronts. It supplies processed plastic to manufacturing plants, creating a reliable income stream, and produces eco-friendly homeware items for local markets, including reusable containers, décor items, and upcycled furniture. Every product reflects environmental responsibility and high-quality workmanship.

Members are trained not only in waste handling and safety standards but also in small business management, quality control, and teamwork. These skills equip them to run their own initiatives and contribute to the broader sustainability economy.

Since 2023, the cooperative has diverted more than 150 tonnes of plastic from landfills. Profits are reinvested into purchasing new machinery, expanding training programmes, and introducing innovative recycling techniques. Jacobs is committed to scaling impact while ensuring the cooperative remains sustainable and community driven.

Looking ahead, ReNew Recycling Co-op plans to launch youth environmental education programmes, teaching the next generation about waste management, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. By connecting economic empowerment with environmental stewardship, Jacobs is creating a model where social enterprise benefits both people and the planet.

Through innovation, determination, and collaboration, Ayesha Jacobs is turning waste into opportunity and shaping a community where women, youth, and the environment all thrive together.
