This Johannesburg based organisation, SA Harvest, is using what it describes as innovative technology to address food insecurity. Like most countries in Africa, South Africa is currently facing food insecurity, this means millions of people are deprived of 3 meals per day.

So this organisation is finding ways to tackle the problem by rescuing nutritious surplus food that would have gone to waste and, using refrigerated vehicles, delivers it to vetted beneficiaries who feed hungry people on a daily basis. According to the organisation, over 10 million tonnes of food (enough to feed these people three nutritious meals a day for over a year) is wasted every year.

When Alan Browde founded the organisation three years ago in response to the crisis, even before the ravages inflicted by Covid and the subsequent lockdowns, it became an inconceivable reality.

The spread of the virus saw many households part ways with people who were sole breadwinners, leaving more people food insecure. The organisation has grown over the years and has reached about 30 million people. Reflecting on the growth the organisation has managed to achieve he said:

“Our growth has been exponential, and this can be attributed to a quite outstanding team which is dedicated to our mission to end hunger in South Africa,”.

He further explained that the work the organisation has been doing would have not been successful had it not been for generous people who funded and donated to the organisation. “Of course, we would not have been able to do this without the incredible generosity of both our food and money donors and we are eternally grateful to them for enabling our ability to give service to millions of hungry South Africans.”
