Spring has sprung and UVIWE Child and Youth Care Services are at attention to provide and create hope for the children and youth within the northern area communities on Port Elizabeth.

Creating opportunities for the youth is always at the heart of what UVIWE strives for; to help young people to be active participants in shaping their own futures. With an energetic, passionate and youthful team on board, the possibilities are limitless!

The initial focus is at the foundation phase. UVIWE has five Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) within the Gelvandale and Shauderville areas of Port Elizabeth. The organisation strongly believes in education for children, giving them healthy balanced meals and being a ‘home away from home’ by allowing children to enjoy their time at school, engaging in conversation and of course learning.

A step on, the focus thn shifts to the grade four to seven learners from the surrounding schools. UVIWE offers an afterschool programme that provides extra maths and English lessons, therapy through art and various lifeskills workshops. During the holidays the organisation also runs a holiday club for those in grade four to seven where they enjoy time together, unpack various life lessons and simply enjoy each others’ company and take part in games.

Literacy is strongly campaigned at UVIWE as without the capability to read and write you inevitably become lost and left behind in life and this would turn out to be crucial to the outcome of children’s development in later years. Therefore a reading programme allowing the kids to enjoy and get creative through reading and story-telling is fundamental for long term benefits.

Parents ultimately have the biggest impact on these kids so we cannot have a focus on our children without educating the parents too. As we believe Today’s child is tomorrow’s parent. Simple teachings of how to engage & understand your child, how to look out for signs of indifference, positive discipline, how to make your child feel valued and safe to open up.

Our programmes are implemented holistically, to stay strongly connected to children, families and communities.

UVIWE Child & Youth Services therefore desire to strengthen sustainable partnerships in our local communities and to build effective systems through collaboration with civil

To develop courageous youngsters whom despite daily social injustices faced, they have a space where they can go, where they can decide to own and shape their destiny.
